Day 13- JHS State Rec Area, OR to Crater Lake, OR

Here is a shot of the shore of the lake from the lookout high above.
This is Wizard Island. The island was formed when more lava pushed up after the original large cone collapsed, forming a mini volcano inside the crater. The local Native Americans had a legend that ended with a demon being pushed down into the volcano, leaving only his hat sticking up.

We began to see more and more snow piled up on the side of the road as we got farther into the park and higher up in elevation. By the time we got near to our cabin we turned on the radio and learned that all the hiking trails were still “buried under snow” and that the park had 80% of its snow cover still on the ground. Most of the drifts were about 8-10 feet tall on the sides of the road where they had plowed.

It was unbelievable how pretty the lake looked with the snow on the ground. The water was so clear and the lake so blue. The lake is filled only with snowfall and rain, which leave no sediment and make the lake extremely clear.
