Day 12- Del Norte Redwood SP, CA to Joseph H. Stewart State Rec Area, OR

Our campground at Del Norte Coast Redwood State Park was very jungle-like. The Redwoods were right on top of us and there were dozens of ferns at our site. The place where we were had been logged about 80 years before, so the trees near our site were only about 80 years old, which is young for Redwoods, but they were still gigantic.

We met a park employee that directed us to a short hike in the Simpson-Reed Grove of Redwoods along our road away from the park. We took his advice and got to see some really old and tall Redwoods along with some great views along streams that ran through the grove.
We also got to see the elusive Banana Slug, of the coastal variety, which is the second largest slug in the world. The one we saw was about 6 inches long, but they can be up to 9.6 inches in length. He almost looked like a pepper someone had thrown down.

Our campsite at Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation area was more modern than most we have been to, and it was very popular for families. We set up our site and went to see a presentation of “Southern Rocks of Oregon” by the director of one of the nearby museums.
