Rainy Weekend Adventure

We originally planned to go camping in Michigan this weekend at Waterloo State Recreation Area, just outside Ann Arbor, MI.  Thunderstorms and low temperatures in the area convinced us we needed to go south instead.  We decided to travel to Lexington, Kentucky for the Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival.  It was a misty, foggy morning, but a good day for travelling.

We stopped at McDonald's in Connersville, IN for a quick breakfast (a bit unusual for us).  Interestingly, Connersville is the birthplace of Howard Garns, the inventor of the sudoku puzzle.  We also made a quick stop in Brooksville at Aromas Cafe for Katy's coffee.  The temperature jumped to the mid 60s to 85F as we moved south through Kentucky and the sun came out to greet us.

Yarn Festival - The Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival (KSFF) was in a really nice park and about half indoor and half out in tents, We were welcomed with a fantastic informational tent and could see 2 yarn trucks from the entrance.

Outside of Yarnbyrds was the fantastic dyer meet and greet with CSDye from Canada/Glasgow, KY. Her colors are bold and prices super reasonable and I had to get a skein! I picked Beach Glass on Alibi Sock.

Other notable stops were with Ewetopia Fiber Mill, where I purchased a gorgeous tunic pattern - the Daisy Pullover, Fairy Tale Knits, and Haus of Yarn.

We watched a sheep shearing demonstration. It was probably one of the best shearing demos I have watched and the announcer was very good at describing the technique to the audience. There was also a volunteer who gave it a shot as well.

Lunch was super yummy, though I apparently forgot to take a picture of my Turkey and Brie Waffle from WhoooWants Waffles. Dean had a lamb BBQ sandwich from another vendor and we both had some fresh squeezed lemonade that was delicious.

Dean and I both missed the memo that it was supposed to be hot today. I mean really hot. It was 90 and the sun was blazing by the time we headed into the 2 vendor barns. We visited one of my favorite indie dyer duos, Brenda and Heather Yarns right as we walked through the doors. Heather visited me at Yarn Stories a few weeks after I opened and I have loved seeing where her fiber adventures take her! When I saw them last at Jay County Fiber Festival in March, we talked some Hufflepuff House themed yarn and I was very happy to see on their instagram (@bahyarns) a couple of weeks later those ideas come to life. I picked up a S.P.E.W. Sock set in Loyalty and I can't wait to cast on!

Next we stopped at ReBelle and purchased the Knitters Against Swatches sets 1 and 2 as a birthday gift for a friend. It was very hot in the barn and I think for the first time I got tired of touching all the wool! We visited all the booths, but my budget had already been reached for today.

Notable stops for the day:
Book Store: Half Price Books
Coffee Shop - Daily Offerings Roastery: excellent coffee and smoothies
